Winter Vehicle Safety

Winter weather can be quite dangerous, particularly when you're on the road. To ensure you are prepared and safe this season, here are some helpful hints:

• Take your vehicle for a check-up. Ensure that your battery, belts, hoses, radiator, oil, lights, brakes, exhaust system, heater/defroster, wipers, and ignition system are examined.
• Install proper winter tires for your vehicle.
• Keep your fuel tank sufficiently full - at least half a tank is recommended.
• Make sure you have adequate windshield washer fluid in your vehicle at all times. Keep an extra jug in the vehicle.
• Travel with an emergency kit.
• Before driving, clear snow and ice from all windows, lights, mirrors, and the roof. Wait for the fog to clear from all interior windows as well.

When preparing an emergency kit for your vehicle, be sure to include:

• Blanket
• Booster cables
• Extra clothing and footwear
• Fire extinguisher (rated A-B-C)
• First aid kit with first aid manual
• Flashlight and batteries
• Gas line antifreeze
• Maps
• Matches and a "survival" candle in a tin can (to warm hands, heat a drink, or use as an emergency light)
• Non-perishable high energy foods (raisins, granola bars, etc.)
• Sand
• Shovel
• Solar, wind-up or battery radio
• Tool kit
• Water (bottled)
• Warning light or reflectors

If you're driving in blowing snow and whiteouts, always remember:

• Slow down gradually and drive at a speed that suits the conditions.
• Make sure the full lighting system of your vehicle is turned on.
• Be patient. Avoid passing, changing lanes and crossing traffic.
• Increase your following distance. You will need extra distance to brake safely.
• Stay alert. Keep looking as far ahead as possible.
• Reduce the distractions in your vehicle. Your full attention is required.
• Keep your windows and mirrors clean. Use defroster and wipers to maximize your vision.
• Try to get off the road when visibility is near zero. Pull into a safe parking area if possible.

In the event that you become trapped in a storm or stuck in a snow bank, the following steps are recommended:

• Stay in your car. You won't get lost and you'll have shelter.
• Wear a hat, as you can lose up to 60 percent of your body heat through your head.
• Keep fresh air in your car. Open a window on the side sheltered from the wind.
• Run your engine sparingly. Beware of exhaust fumes and the possibility of carbon monoxide.
• Ensure the tailpipe is not blocked by snow.
• Set out a warning light or flares.
• Exercise your limbs - keep moving and don't fall asleep.
• Keep watch for traffic or searchers.
• Avoid overexertion and exposure.
