Consider these facts for a moment:
- In 2001, cardiovascular disease accounted for 74,824 Canadian deaths.
- There are between 40,000 and 50,000 strokes in Canada each year.
- An estimated 139,900 new cases of cancer were estimated to occur in Canada in 2003.
But there’s good news as well:
- Between 1969 and 1999, death rates due to heart disease and stroke decreased by 56%.
- Of every 100 people who are hospitalized for stroke, 50 return home.
- Since 1988, among men, the death rate for all cancers combined has declined 12%. Since 1988, among women, there has been a 13% decline in death rates for all cancers combined, excluding lung cancer.
